The Steering Committee of the NSF funded Research Coordination Network (RCN) on Sustainable Human-Building Ecosystems (SHBE), in partnership with the Carnegie Mellon University, cordially invites you to participate at the Workshop IV (Theme IV) on Life-Cycle Assessment & Business Ecosystem

*TheTheme IV Workshopwill be held in conjunction with the SHBE RCN 1st International Symposium on Sustainable Human-Building Ecosystems, immediately preceeding the workshop on October 4-6, 2015. The workshop is open to all symposium participants and SHBE RCN members and participants.

The workshop will cover a wide range of topics through presentations, technical sessions and poster sessions on, but not limited to, the following topics:

1. Theories, methods and data for life cycle analysis of human behaviors in built environment

    • Stakeholders' behavior and design decisions
    • Occupants and facilities managers' behavior and its impact on building maintenance
    • Occupant behavior and its impact on building operations
    • Contractor's behavior and its impact of construction processes
    • Owner's decisions on recycling and reusing of building components
    • Integrated behavior modeling in built environment

2. Benefits, challenges and barriers of adoption of new technologies in the building industry and public policymaking

3. Other behavior issues related to building life cycle

Synopsis

In the context of built environment, the concept of life cycle assessment (LCA) as an estimating and assessment method of environmental performance of building products, processes and building themselves has been evolving from solely focusing on environmental consequences to a broader scope including environmental life cycle assessment, life cycle costing and social life cycle assessment.

The extension of environmental LCA to life cycle sustainability assessment ultimately puts human and economic considerations at the same level of significance with the environmental performance of products, processes and buildings. Nevertheless, how to effectively address human and business needs and their impact on the natural environment using an integrated assessment framework becomes a new challenge, both in theory and practice.

The evolution calls for new ideas, methods, and theories to advance the existing LCA framework, and develop scientific and operational underpinning to support research in sustainable built environment. While many ongoing dynamic life cycle assessment studies are looking into the spatial and temporal dynamic aspects of LCA, this workshop invites scholars and researchers who are studying or interested in the impact of human behavior and business decisions on the life cycle of products, processes and buildings. Relevant contributions such as theories, conceptual frameworks, quantitative analysis, computational models, applications, or empirical studies are all welcome.
